The Lamplit story starts with my grandfather, a lifelong Carolinian and craftsman when he wasn’t serving in the Navy. He built sailboats, tables, clocks, and a hundred other things. He built a legacy.

During my childhood visits, I spent time with him in his shop and watched him work. Between cuts and sips of iced coffee, he’d tell me about what he was doing and why.

I’ve always had a passion for creating, and for much of my life I did that creating on computers. After traveling and working all over the world, I returned home to North Carolina and reunited with my grandfather. It was a rediscovery of something beautiful: of working with my hands to use more than a keyboard. It was as if twenty years were brushed aside and I was in love with the smells and sounds of the woodshop again.

I never knew how much joy I could get from the process of creating furniture–of hand-picking the raw lumber, feeling and reading its grain, honing it, sawing it, planing it, and shaping it.

Woodworking is cathartic.

Now let’s talk about us. Me and you, I mean. We accumulate things throughout our lives, but how many of those things are keepers? How many are heirlooms? How many of our things do we cherish and know we’ll pass on to future generations?

When so many things are machine-made and mass-produced, I want to do my small part to bring back a personal touch. I want to provide you with something one-of-a-kind, made just for you. Something that will become part of your story.
